What's going on between Houston and NOLA?

So, back in Houston, I am writing and connecting to more professional musicians.  It is true that this city seems to have more to offer and is faring better in difficult economic times.  In addition, there seems to be a love for the arts and a well-defined support system.  I look forward to hearing more concerts and singers in order to know this for myself.  Nevertheless, I head back to NOLA on Friday and am happy to participate in an important event that is connected to citizens' concerns over the safety of the city.

In NOLA

The Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra is growing!  It was terrific to hear a full brass section tonight, hear parts of two concerti featuring young soloists, and a rousing overture.  Cheryl Landrieu and a local writer sponsored the event in affiliation with Children's Book Fest.  Beautiful venue: the lawn of the Latter Library on St. Charles Ave.

I was also able to share time with my hostess, do a little shopping, and edit a CD recording that is much needed for future projects.

Indeed, it was a positive day in NOLA.

Visiting New Orleans

Some fun things on the horizon in New Orleans!  I have a performance tonight with Bon Operatit!, the trio of opera singers.  We will also meet to discuss final plans for recording session no. 2.  I have completed three arrangements for this recording and have four more to go.  We have two wonderful performers assisting on violin and oboe/English horn.  Then, I'll be on with Francis Scully on Saturday evening for a performance of tango music for a tango group that is going strong in New Orleans.  In addition, I'll be able to visit friends and colleagues.  Should be exciting!

Reaching Out

Over the past couple of days I have found myself writing messages in various forms, holding phone conversations, working with a web designer, and meeting new people.  With luck, there will be follow through as far as connecting to professional musicians in the classical world.  Week No. 2 is on its way!

Navigating Houston

Wow!  Only six days in Houston!  I am realizing what an active, dynamic, and potentially exciting place this can be for the study and performance of classical music.  I am eager to meet the professional community of teachers, directors, and performers.  Meanwhile, I encourage you to take a look at some of the creative projects I am involved with in New Orleans by visiting these websites: www.newresonanceorchestra.org and www.bonoperatit.com.  Connections!
